Each year during Lilac Days, a plant sale is held featuring lilacs in many sizes and varieties. A few of the varieties sold are ones that Hulda herself hybridized. In 1905 Hulda began hybridizing lilacs and by 1910 she had created 14 new varieties. By 1920 she had developed so many new varieties that she decided to hold an open house each spring when the lilacs were in full bloom to share her efforts with other lilac enthusiasts. This practice caused her to become known as “The Lilac Lady.” She’s famous for My Favorite, Frank Klager, Pink Elizabeth, Fritz Klager, Alice Christensen, and many more. Visit the annual plant sale but plan to come early for best selection. Proceeds from the plant sales fund the garden maintenance and the National Historic site.
